Intro

Total Handy is a small, family-run business, and this project represented a major milestone for them, it was the very first website they’ve ever had. Prior to this, all their marketing and customer interactions happened through word of mouth, phone calls, and in-person referrals.

The client wanted to establish a digital presence that reflects the professionalism, versatility, and craftsmanship of their services, while also making it easy for new customers to find and trust them.

As a first website for a small business, it was crucial to create a design that felt approachable yet professional, balancing simplicity with clear communication of services. My goal was to not only design a visually appealing website but also to create an intuitive user experience that allows visitors to understand what Total Handy does, see the results of their work, and easily get in touch.

Client Collaboration

From the start, the client was open, friendly, and easygoing, which made collaboration smooth and efficient. They trusted my recommendations, allowing me to explore creative approaches and provide guidance on best practices for small business websites. This trust enabled a flexible and iterative process where design decisions were aligned with both their vision and the needs of their potential customers.

We spent time discussing how they wanted to present their services, what kind of imagery would resonate with their audience, and which features were most important for their first website. This collaborative approach ensured the final product truly represented their business and their personal touch in every project.

Goal of the Website

The primary goal of the website was to showcase the breadth and quality of Total Handy’s services in a way that is clear, visually engaging, and easy to navigate. Since the business offers a wide range of services, from painting and general repairs to basement renovations and custom woodworking, it was important that the website could highlight each area without overwhelming the visitor.

One of the key features we focused on was the “before and after” project showcase. By including images of projects before and after the work was completed, visitors can immediately see the quality, attention to detail, and transformative results of Total Handy’s services. This visual storytelling approach not only demonstrates expertise but also builds trust with potential customers who are considering hiring the business.

Design & Branding

Although logo design is not my usual area of specialization, I took the opportunity to create a custom logo for Total Handy. The design incorporates handyman tools into the letters “T” and “H,” symbolizing the practical, hands-on nature of the business while keeping the design clean and memorable. The logo helped establish a strong brand identity that carries through the website and other materials.

In addition to the website and logo, I also designed a business card for the client. This gave them a professional, tangible tool to share with customers and potential clients, ensuring that the branding is consistent across both digital and physical touchpoints. By aligning the website, logo, and business card, the client has a cohesive brand that feels polished and trustworthy.

Process & Approach

The process started with understanding the client’s business, their goals, and their customers. I created wireframes and mockups to explore the layout and visual hierarchy, ensuring that the “before and after” project showcase and the service sections were prominently featured. Once the structure was approved, I moved into high-fidelity design, selecting colors, typography, and imagery that reflected the professionalism and craftsmanship of the business.

During development, I focused on making the site responsive, fast, and user-friendly. Since this was the client’s first website, it was particularly important to make navigation intuitive and ensure that visitors could easily find the information they needed, whether it was viewing services, checking past projects, or contacting the business.

Outcome

The final result is a polished, professional, and visually engaging website that allows Total Handy to present their business to the world for the first time. The site effectively highlights their work through “before and after” examples, showcases their range of services, and provides clear calls-to-action for potential customers to get in touch.

This project not only gave the client their first digital presence but also provided them with a cohesive brand identity that includes a logo and business card. It demonstrates how thoughtful design and strategic storytelling can help small businesses build credibility, showcase their expertise, and attract new clients.

Reflection

Working on Total Handy’s website was a rewarding experience because it combined creative design, branding, and practical problem-solving. I enjoyed the trust and collaboration with the client, and it was fulfilling to deliver a project that will have a real impact on their business. This project reinforced the importance of understanding the client’s goals, the needs of their audience, and the value of visual storytelling, especially for small businesses taking their first step into the digital space.
