Project Overview

Kanfest is a three-day summer whitewater festival held on the Kananaskis River in Alberta, a Class III river that hosts a wide range of paddling disciplines. The event brings together the whitewater community through competitions in kayaking, SUP, rafting, packrafting, and river surfing, alongside food, drinks, and prizes.

I supported the festival as a volunteer by designing and building the website, with a focus on usability, scalability, and long-term ownership by a volunteer-led team.

Goals & Constraints

The primary goal was to create a website that could support ticket sales and clearly communicate complex, location-based event information. A key constraint was ensuring the platform could be easily maintained by non-technical volunteers before and during the festival.

To address this, the site was strategically built in Wix, allowing organizers to update content, schedules, and announcements independently while keeping the experience consistent and reliable for users.

User Needs

Festival participants needed a clear understanding of:

  • How to purchase tickets, courses, and merchandise

  • Where activities, rapids, and competition zones were located along the river

  • What amenities were available on site, such as camping areas and toilets
The website needed to reduce uncertainty for first-time visitors while remaining efficient for returning paddlers who already knew the river.

Solution

The final website acts as a central hub for the festival. It supports ticket sales, merchandise purchases, a blog, and course registrations in one streamlined flow.

A custom-designed river map provides spatial context, highlighting river drops, rapids, and key amenities to help users plan their time on and off the water.
To build anticipation, a live countdown was added to create momentum in the weeks leading up to the event.

Design System & Experience

The design system was intentionally kept simple, clear, and timeless so it could be reused for future editions of the festival. The UI prioritizes readability and ease of navigation, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of users and making ongoing maintenance straightforward for the organizing team.

Beyond Digital

To extend the experience beyond the website, I also designed physical assets including printed river maps and stickers distributed during the festival. The stickers feature the same map design, allowing participants to attach them to their boats and easily reference river features while on the water.

Impact & Personal Contribution

I have been involved in the whitewater community since 2021, and this project was completed as a volunteer contribution. Being able to support the festival through design allowed me to combine my professional skills with a community that has had a meaningful impact on my life. The project helped make the event more accessible, better organized, and easier to navigate for participants of all experience levels.
